On the Integral Self: A Wisdom from the Grand Master

Integral Self and its Philosophy

What is the integral self? How can we develop it? And why does it matter? These are some of the questions that we will explore, based on the ideas of Ken Wilber, a pioneer of integral theory and practice. We will also hear a piece of practical advice for us on the integral self from our Grand Master Ruben B. Ecleo, Jr.

The integral self is a term that refers to a level of consciousness that transcends and includes all the previous stages of human development. It is a self that can integrate multiple perspectives, values, and domains of knowledge, without being limited by any of them. It is a self that can embrace both the individual and the collective, both the inner and the outer, both the rational and the spiritual.

The integral self is not a fixed state, but a dynamic process of growth and transformation. It is not something that we have or don't have, but something that we can cultivate and express in various ways. It is not a goal to be achieved, but a potential to be realized.

One of the ways to develop the integral self is to follow the four quadrants model proposed by Wilber. This model suggests that reality can be divided into four domains: the subjective (I), the objective (It), the intersubjective (We), and the interobjective (Its). Each quadrant represents a different aspect of our experience and existence, and each one has its own methods of inquiry and validation.

Integral Innovation is an application of the integral meta-theory (Ken Wilber) to the domain of creativity and innovation.

The subjective quadrant refers to our inner world of thoughts, feelings, sensations, and intentions. It is the domain of psychology, spirituality, and art. The objective quadrant refers to our outer world of physical phenomena, behaviors, and actions. It is the domain of science, technology, and engineering. The intersubjective quadrant refers to our shared world of culture, values, norms, and meanings. It is the domain of sociology, anthropology, and humanities. The interobjective quadrant refers to our systemic world of structures, systems, networks, and patterns. It is the domain of ecology, economics, and politics.

To develop the integral self, we need to pay attention to all four quadrants, and not neglect or favor any of them. We need to cultivate our subjective awareness through meditation, introspection, and self-expression. We need to explore our objective reality through observation, experimentation, and problem-solving. We need to engage with our intersubjective culture through dialogue, collaboration, and learning. We need to understand our interobjective systems through analysis, synthesis, and design.

By doing so, we can expand our horizons and perspectives, and become more aware of the complexity and diversity of reality. We can also balance our needs and interests with those of others and the environment. We can appreciate the beauty and wisdom of different traditions and disciplines without being dogmatic or relativistic. We can create more harmony and synergy among ourselves and with nature.

The integral self is not only a personal achievement but also a social responsibility. By developing our integral self, we can contribute to the evolution of humanity and the planet. We can become agents of change and innovation in our fields and communities. We can foster more compassion and understanding in our relationships. We can co-create a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.

The integral self is not a utopian ideal but a realistic possibility. It is not something that we wait for but something that we work for. It is not something that we hope for but something that we live for.

Practical Advice from Grand Master on Achieving an Integral Self

Achieving an integral self is a goal that many of us strive for, but it can be difficult to know where to start. Fortunately, our Grand Master has shared his practical advice on how to achieve this state of being.

Firstly, it is important to understand that an integral self is one that is balanced in all aspects of life - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. To achieve this balance, the Grand Master recommends a daily practice of meditation and physical exercise. In addition, it is important to cultivate positive relationships with others and to practice self-reflection and self-awareness. This can be achieved through journaling, therapy, or simply taking time to reflect on one's thoughts and actions. The Grand Master also emphasizes the importance of living in the present moment and letting go of attachment to past experiences or future expectations. This can be achieved through mindfulness practices and focusing on gratitude for the present moment.

Overall, achieving an integral self requires dedication and consistent effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. By following these practical tips from Grand Master, anyone can work towards achieving a balanced and fulfilling life.
